s-Block Elements (Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals)

  • After introduction about s – block elements in this chapter we know about the group-1 elements :- atomic properties : electronic configuration, atomic and ionic radii, ionisation enthalpy, hydration enthalpy; physical properties, chemical properties and uses of group-1 elements. Then we know the general characteristics of the compounds of the alkali metals. Then we study the anomalous properties of lithium, then about some important compounds of sodium. Then we know the biological importance of sodium and potassium. Then we learn about group-2 elements :- atomic properties : electronic configuration, atomic and ionic radii, ionisation enthalpy, hydration enthalpy; physical properties, chemical properties and uses of group-2 elements. Then we know the general characteristics of the compounds of the alkaline earth metals. Then study the anomalous properties of beryllium, then about some important compounds of calcium and finally learn about biological importance of magnesium and calcium.
